A number of African heads of state managers and senior representatives of the E.U., U.S., and China were on Sunday in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa for the funeral of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi.
Among other things, the Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt was in place in the country, where two Swedish journalists remain imprisoned.
Deputy Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn is now taking charge over Ethiopia as new Prime Minister.
It was the first state funeral in Ethiopia for over 80 years.
It is still unclear how the change of power affects the possible pardon of Swedish journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye.
But Carl Bildt’s trip to Ethiopia will hopefully help get the Swedish journalists released.
We have every reason to hope that Ethiopia now will open up the political system and in this way give the country a more stable and better governance for years to come, Bildt wrote on his blog.
Hopefully Swedish FM Carl Bildt got the opportunity to address the issue concerning the imprisoned Swedish journalists Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye with Ethiopia’s new leader.
